There are numerous benefits to being a Cambridge Teaching Qualifications Center, and one of them is the opportunity to offer free English lessons.
To potential students who we tell this too, however, this sounds like a trap, or a scam: everyone knows, after all, that nothing is for free, in particular if it’s being offered over the internet.
The reason we are writing this post is to allay students’ fears about this.
Teaching Students through Teacher Training
English for Africa’s primary business is training teachers of English as a foreign language, mainly on the Cambridge CELTA course. This teacher training course is one of the most prestigious worldwide, and is considered by many to be a passport to obtaining work as an EFL teacher most everywhere in the world.
One of the things that sets the CELTA apart from most other teaching qualifications is the compulsory six hours of assessed teaching practice.
Teaching practice is where teachers teach real students. While they are teaching, their trainers are watching and assessing them. The trainer then provides personalized feedback to the trainee teachers based on their performance teaching that lesson. This approach helps teachers learn to apply the theory behind language teaching in a practical way.
Free English Lessons for All
While some of our trainee teachers are neophytes, many of them having been teaching already for several years, and take the CELTA as a means of acquiring an internationally recognized qualification. The trainee teachers are supported in planning their lessons, using communicative language teaching methodologies, meaning that classes feature a great deal of self-expression among students. They are fun and effective.
Still, since the teachers are on a training course, we at English for Africa don’t feel it would be ethical to charge money for these lessons. After all, we are already getting paid by the teachers, and it is their training which is the primary focus of our company.
All of which means that high quality English lessons can be provided for free. We run regular online courses, with classes for both lower-level and higher-level learners, and we are always looking for individual students, and partners through whom to offer these free lessons.
We take recruitment of our students seriously, because it dove-tails with the mission of our company: to provide high quality English language teaching to all.
